The film follows two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, Josef Gabčik (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubis (Jamie Dornan), who are parachuted into their occupied homeland in December 1941. Comment For Movie Anthropoid Full Movie

Name : Liz Braun / Alias : Toronto Sun
From an historical viewpoint, the events depicted in Anthropoid are more than enough to hold a viewer's interest, but you never forget that you're watching a movie.

Name : Boyd van Hoeij / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
Valkyrie this is not.

Name : Peter Travers / Alias : Rolling Stone
Anthropoid reduces a riveting and resonant piece of WW2 history to moral muddle and monotonous filmmaking. Talk about an opportunity missed.

Name : Farran Smith Nehme / Alias : New York Post
This is a story of heroes, and the second half in particular shows why.

Name : David Ehrlich / Alias : indieWIRE
Despite the film's gripping final chapter, its heroic Czechoslovakian characters are completely disconnected from the rest of the country, much like their struggle has been omitted from the cinematic legacy of the war they helped to win.

Name : Alan Scherstuhl / Alias : Village Voice
It's the kind of movie where, even if you miss the ads, you can guess you'll be seeing Toby Jones.

Name : Joe Morgenstern / Alias : Wall Street Journal
An hour of plodding preparations does lead to guerrilla action, then to a long shootout in a church, but by then anyone watching will have realized that "Anthropoid" is the code name for a snore.

Name : Andy Webster / Alias : New York Times
It takes Sean Ellis's World War II thriller "Anthropoid" a while to build steam, but once it does, hang on.

Name : Alonso Duralde / Alias : TheWrap
Loses its footing, never quite regaining it until an extended sequence in which the seven parachutists hide out in a church, keeping wave after wave of Nazi soldiers at bay. But by the time it arrives in the film, it's almost too little, too late.

Name : Soren Anderson / Alias : Seattle Times
Filmed in sepia tones to give it period flavor, infused with a sense of unrelieved tension and paranoia, and climaxing with a furious gunbattle, "Anthropoid" is a gripping picture.

Name : Marsha Lederman / Alias : Globe and Mail
While it's easy to sneer at the romantic subplot, it serves to humanize the characters and convey their intense fear. Otherwise we know too little about them - beyond the fact they are all impossibly good-looking.

Name : Mike D'Angelo / Alias : AV Club
Dramatically, it's not much of a movie, but if you just want to know how things went down, it's certainly a more exciting precis than Wikipedia's.

Name : Colin Covert / Alias : Minneapolis Star Tribune
Watching this vicious David and Goliath battle is a reminder of humanity's limitless capacity for destruction.

Name : Joe McGovern / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Though Anthropoid lacks narrative ambition, the film justifies its reason for being thanks to a devastating final half-hour.

Name : Peter Keough / Alias : Boston Globe
At its best the film evokes the palpable terror of a city where uniformed thugs could arrest or kill anyone at any time with impunity.

Name : Randy Cordova / Alias : Arizona Republic
Handsomely produced, with a vivid period atmosphere aided by a faded color palette, which adds both an unease and a glowing sense of nostalgia to the proceedings.

Name : Peter Debruge / Alias : Variety
Anthropoid is a peculiarly wooden period piece, as timid characters try to muster the courage to do what is asked of them.

Name : Christopher Kompanek / Alias : Washington Post
War movies all too often take it for granted that some causes are worth dying for. To have characters grapple with that notion, imperfectly, is nothing short of cathartic.

Name : Sheri Linden / Alias : Los Angeles Times
Enlightening but seldom riveting .

Name : Matthew Lickona / Alias : San Diego Reader
The final showdown gets blown up and dragged out, but the slow-burning fuse of everything that comes before helps to justify the explosive release.

Name : Adam Graham / Alias : Detroit News
A post-script details the aftermath of the movie's action, which seems to underscore the point that war is hell. To that point, so is "Anthropoid."

Name : Linda Barnard / Alias : Toronto Star
The story . feels leaden and burdened by a false ending.

Name : James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
The movie builds - something infinitely preferable to a bold, brash beginning followed by a descent into anti-climax.

Name : Leah Pickett / Alias : Chicago Reader
This beautifully photographed but slow-moving thriller dramatizes the events of Operation Anthropoid, the British military mission in which members of the Czech resistance were recruited to assassinate high-ranking Nazi official Reinhard Heydrich.

Name : Glenn Kenny / Alias : RogerEbert.com
A lot of the time the experience of the movie is like looking at a very long wobbly rectangle, and the frequently abrupt cutting doesn't help.

Comment For 4k HD Risen ღ

Name : Colin Covert / Alias : Minneapolis Star Tribune
What a good surprise it was to watch a biblical feature less preachy, less stuffy and more entertaining than most. "Risen" is an original crime-fiction take on a story as old as stories get.

Name : Michael Nordine / Alias : Village Voice
Despite not doing much more than preach to the choir, Risen is still more nuanced than the lion's share of recent faith-based dramas.

Name : Ann Hornaday / Alias : Washington Post
Viewers already well-versed in the greatest story ever told might find their interest piqued by the filmmakers' unconventional take. It's unlikely, however, that "Risen" will preach to anyone outside the choir.

Name : Mick LaSalle / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
Whatever your religious affiliation, you will come away thinking that if all this did actually happen, it probably happened something like this.

Name : Bill Goodykoontz / Alias : Arizona Republic
It's not especially challenging. But it is several steps up from some faith-based fare, and it will doubtless appeal to its target audience.

Name : Inkoo Kang / Alias : TheWrap
A fairly ambitious picture tailor-made for that slice of the Christian audience accustomed to the tropes and beats of prestige cable dramas.

Name : Katie Walsh / Alias : Los Angeles Times
"Risen" is a fascinating cultural artifact, but as a film, it's destined for no glory greater than as an appropriate cable rerun on Easter.

Name : Christian Holub / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Risen is more entertaining than Bible-adjacent stories are usually allowed to be.

Name : Richard Roeper / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
Fiennes sticks with the brooding, stoic performance, even when Clavius is undergoing some major changes. It's not his best work.

Name : Joshua Rothkopf / Alias : Time Out
It's not often that faith-based films, competing in the same marketplace that rewards action, embrace the deeper, more difficult idea of meeting hate with love, but Risen tries.

Name : Justin Chang / Alias : Variety
Whether or not it triggers a craze for divinely inspired detective stories, "Risen" makes a decent case for itself as the "Columbo" of the genre: It's amiable, creaky and not remotely predicated on the element of surprise.

Name : Stephen Whitty / Alias : New York Daily News
Reynolds' gets many things right: the blasted look of the desert, the dusty provincial look of a far-flung Roman outpost. And the story he tells is both serious and modest.

Name : Bilge Ebiri / Alias : New York Magazine/Vulture
For a film that could have easily become bogged down in Sunday School reverence, or culture-war opportunism, Risen presents an intriguing, oblique approach to a Bible movie.

Name : Peter Keough / Alias : Boston Globe
We know how it turns out, but seeing from the point of view of someone who doesn't know and doesn't believe adds more cogency.

Name : Kyle Smith / Alias : New York Post
A low-IQ affair that supposes that the Gospels will sound more convincing if seen through the eyes of a skeptic. Instead, it seeks to improve the New Testament by putting a layer of Naugahyde upholstery on it.

Name : Soren Anderson / Alias : Seattle Times
Fiennes is superb, portraying a man slowly transformed by events that shake his beliefs about the world and his place in it to their core.

Name : Adam Graham / Alias : Detroit News
"Risen" was never meant as anything but a tool for the converted. Talk about preaching to the choir.

Name : Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
While it descends too often into the melodramatic, it's a solid, smart picture and a welcome addition to the genre.

Name : Amy Nicholson / Alias : MTV
It's pointed about how we treat today's zealots, as when Clavius likens the pain of crucification to "sucking air through a wet cloth" - a description of waterboarding.

Name : Ignatiy Vishnevetsky / Alias : AV Club
The film ends up falling into a loop of abortive climaxes, set against an indistinguishable beige-gray backdrop of limestone, before the inevitable cheap-looking flash of CGI light in a scraggly field.

Name : Kate Taylor / Alias : Globe and Mail
The film features a lush historical setting and some satisfying action scenes, but the dialogue is often laughable, a mix of the pseudo-archaic with oddly contemporary lingo.

Name : Peter Howell / Alias : Toronto Star
It's intended primarily for an audience of Christian believers, but genuine drama precedes the preaching.

Name : Jim Slotek / Alias : Toronto Sun
It's nice to finally see the Messiah portrayed by somebody who'd probably get extra attention at a U.S. airport by Homeland Security.

Name : Jeannette Catsoulis / Alias : New York Times
If you drink every time you're reminded of Monty Python's 1979 Judean jaunt, "Life of Brian," you might just make it through to the end.
